It opens upwards, not outwards
The door is made of horizontal panels joined by hinges. When it opens, the panels rise vertically in the two side tracks, turn above the opening and stop under the ceiling.
The door never leaves the plane of the opening. That is why a car can stand right in front of it, and why it works on short, sloping or shared driveways.
Who it suits, and who it doesn't
The right door is the one that fits the garage. So we also say when another type is the better choice.
A good choice if
- your driveway is short, or the garage opens straight onto the pavement or street;
- the driveway slopes, or the garage is under the house at the end of a ramp;
- a car is regularly parked in front of the door;
- the garage opens onto a shared yard or a narrow lane;
- the garage is part of the house and a well-sealed, insulated door matters.
Choose another type if
- there is not enough room above the opening and under the ceiling for the tracks and panels;
- a beam, pipe or storage rack under the ceiling is in the way and cannot be moved;
- you want a simple door for an unheated garage with plenty of space in front.
In these cases an up-and-over garage door may be the better choice.

Five measurements for an accurate quote
A tape measure and ten minutes are enough. The door is built to the confirmed dimensions.
- Width: between the two sides of the opening, at the finished wall surfaces.
- Height: from the finished floor to the top of the opening.
- Headroom: from the top of the opening to the ceiling.
- Side room: from the edge of the opening to the side wall, on both sides.
- Depth: from the opening to the back wall of the garage.
